Subject: Open Positions for Industry-Sponsored Project on AI Policy & Governance at IISc
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is undertaking an industry-sponsored project titled “Understanding India’s Perspective on Artificial Intelligence Policy & Governance”. As part of this project, applications are invited from promising candidates for the following open positions:
A. Project Lead (1)
B. Project Associate (1)

A. AI Policy Project Lead

Location | The position is based in IISc Bangalore with frequent travel |
Duties and Overview:
The AI Policy Project Lead will oversee the daily operations of the project, manage a team of researchers and policy analysts, and provide overall coordination support. This role includes responsibility for the entire research project and its deliverables.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct in-depth, data-driven AI policy analysis and provide insights.
Perform academic research on AI policy and governance maXers based on technological development in the Indian ecosystem.
Coordinate the overall project and ensure timely delivery of all outputs.
Develop in-house capacity in policy analytics through training and research activities.
Collaborate with stakeholders from academia, industry, government, and international partners.
Offer insights to various ministries and departments of the Government of India.
Present research findings at national and international events to engage a wider audience.
Write op-eds, and popular articles, and publish findings for broader dissemination.
Essential Qualification:
Master’s degree in science/engineering/social sciences with a focus on public policy, technology policy and international relations.
At least 3 years of experience in government, policy research and academia, preferably in international policy space of AI
Experience in a policy environment and in managing a team.
Demonstrated experience in conducting AI technology assessment, data-driven policy analysis exercises and generating insights.
Strong communication and collaboration skills
Desirable Qualifications:
Strong understanding of both the global and Indian AI ecosystems.
Knowledge of global AI competition, technology diplomacy, and international engagement.
Experience in conducting expert interviews and stakeholder consultations.
B. Project Associate

Period | Initially for 6 months, which can be extended to a year |
Salary | Consolidated pay; INR 35,000 per month (minimum); actual salary will be commensurate with qualifications, expertise and experience. |
Location | The position is based in IISc Bangalore |
Duties and Overview:
Research Assistants will play a key role in executing various project tasks. They will collaborate closely with the project lead and the larger team, providing in-house research, literature reviews, conducting interviews, and supporting quantitative analysis. We are especially interested in researchers with expertise and interest in areas such as data policy, artificial intelligence and machine learning development, and technology policy, governance, and diplomacy.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct research and analysis on policy issues related to science, technology, and innovation in line with project goals and vision.
Collect, organize and analyse data using various qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Provide research inputs and collaborate with stakeholders from experts in the field.
Support the development of reports, policy briefs, and presentations.
Assist in organizing events and meetings related to the project.
Stay informed about relevant policy developments, research, and news.
Essential Qualification:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in science/engineering/social sciences with a specialization in technology policy, data science and related fields are encouraged to apply.
Minimum of 1 year of experience in policy research, academia or think tanks.
Strong analytical and research skills.
Proficiency in Microsod Office Suite and data analysis tools.
Excellent wriXen and oral communication skills.
Detail-oriented and highly organized.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Interest in science, technology, and innovation policy.
Desirable Qualifications:
Strong policy research background in AI, ML, or technology and innovation policy.
Experience with advanced research and analytics tools.
Authored publications, reports and policy briefs in the S&T policy domain
